The Pre-Engineering Program of Study focuses a broad range of engineering careers and foundation knowledge including basic safety, plan reading, use of tools and equipment as well as how to employ positive work ethics in an engineering career.
PLTW’s mission is to prepare students for the global economy, which it does by increasing the number of American students prepared to enter the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce. PLTW programs give students hands-on, project-based experiences, helping them link math, technology, and science concepts to real-world problem solving.
Our PLTW program has been nationally certified since 2015. The national PLTW recognition program distinguishes schools for successfully demonstrating a commitment to PLTW’s national standards. Additionally, certification as a PLTW school provides students with the opportunity to apply for college credit or receive college-level recognition at PLTW affiliate universities when they successfully complete select PLTW courses in high school. PLTW has more than 50 college, university and research partners.
Dual Credit Opportunities:
Through a partnership with West Virginia University (WVU), students in PLTW have the opportunity to receive undergraduate college credit for $25 per credit hour. Students can receive credit for ENGR 100 by satisfactorily completing Introduction to Engineering Design and Principles of Engineering. Students can receive credit for ENGR 101 by satisfactorily completing all four required PLTW courses and achieving a an AP Calculus AB score of 4 or 5.
Through a partnership with Marshall University (MU), students in PLTW have the opportunity to receive undergraduate college credit for $75 per class while taking Introduction to Engineering and Design, and Principles of Engineering and Design. Students receive credit for ENG 280 and 281, which take the place of ENG 101, 102, 103, and 104.
