General tips for searching for scholarships

1) Fill out the FAFSA in a timely manner.  (After October 1st and before March 1st) 2)Work with the financial aid officer at the school you wish to attend. 3) Many area churches of civic organizations may offer scholarship opportunities. 4) Scholarship search engines are good tools for national scholarships.  College Foundation of West Virginia (www.cfwv.com) provides a quality search engine for students/parents seeking scholarship and other financial aid information. 5) Local businesses often offer scholarships or grants. 6) Most major retailers/banks/etc. offer scholarships- use the internet to search Lowes, Wal-mart, Home Depot, etc.-searching for these will “bring up” other scholarships 7) Feel free to contact your students; counselor at Spring Valley High School with any question and/or concerns. 8) Leave no “stone unturned”.

Yanni_Scholarship_Application – The purpose of the Albert Yanni Scholarship is to provide incentive and encouragement for talented career and technical education students to pursue advanced education and/or training.  Scholarships are worth $2,000 and applicants must provide proof that they have maintained their eligibility. Deadline is March 31, 2017.

Alpha Delta Kappa, XI Chapter – The XI Chapter is providing a $500 scholarship for a male or female student who is planning on majoring in education. See attached application for more details. Deadline is April 15, 2017. Return to Mr. Jordan

2017 Alpha Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society – Each year they provide a $300 grant to a female high school senior who plans on pursuing a degree in education. Deadline is March 8, 2017

Arthur Browning scholarship Application – For students graduating in 2017 from a Wayne County High School with preference given to those who attend New Vision Baptist Church, Wayne, WV. Please see attached application for further details. Deadline is May 5, 2017.

The Bill Stewart Journalism Scholarship – This scholarship is in memory of ABC newscaster Bill Stewart (a Wayne County graduate). The recipient of this $250 scholarship must be majoring in print or broadcast journalism. Deadline is April 15th, 2017. Please return application to Mr. Jordan

2017 C-K Rotary Scholarship – The C-K Rotary Club is sponsoring a one time $1,000 scholarship for students attending a West Virginia college or university. Please see attached application for further information. Deadline is April 3, 2017. Please return to Mr. Jordan

C-K Rotary CTE scholarship 2017 – The C-K Rotary Club is sponsoring a one time $500 scholarship for a student planning to attend a career and technical school, community college, junior college, etc. Please see attached application for further guidelines and additional information. The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation – The applications are available on-line at www.tgkvf.org  Students can click on scholarships and obtain the following 1) Scholarship information 2) List of available scholarships 3) on-line application.  There are 90 different scholarships from which to choose. Almost $685,000 in total scholarship money was awarded in 2016. Deadline January 15, 2017

2016-2017 The Garrett Hoback Scholarship – One Male and One Female…$400.00 scholarship for a Spring Valley High School senior. The student must have a 3.0 GPA and use the money towards a post-secondary degree. Deadline is April 15, 2017. Please return application to Mr. Jordan

Griffith Scholarship Application 2017 – The scholarship is awarded to an individual who best exemplifies Mr. Griffith’s dedication to tennis as a life-long endeavor.  While the Scholarship is not limited to a competitive tennis player, non-tennis players must have a connection to the tennis community at-large.  Selection criteria includes, but is not limited to, sportsmanship, moral character, citizenship and satisfactory academic standing. Financial need may be considered.  Candidates must also plan to attend an accredited 2-4 year college, university, community college or technical school.  Please see attached application for further details.  Deadline is March 17, 2017

Horatio Alger Scholarship Program– $2,500 scholarship for students interested in pursuing career and technical education. www.application.horatioalger.org

HJC Chester A. Riley Scholarship -Huntington Junior College is pleased to announce the 2017 Chester A. Riley Scholarship Test. As in the past, the test is designed to provide scholarships to students who plan to continue their education at the college level. The career choices include Management, Accounting. Administrative Technologv, Medical Assisting. Medical Coding. Dental Assisting. and Realtime Reporting. and Substance Abuse Counseling Assistant. This year the test will produce ten winners. The first place winner will receive a full scholarship, which includes full tuition and textbooks in connection with an Associate Degree at Huntington Junior College in the field of the winner’s choice. The approximate value of this award is $16,200. The next nine places will be awarded partial scholarships in the amount of $1,800 each. These awards provide a total of $32,400 in scholarship aid to Tri-State area students.

2017 King’s Daughters Health Foundation HC Scholarship – A scholarship is awarded in the amount of $2,500 for the first school year, and the use is limited to tuition, room and board, books and lab fees for a student pursuing a career in healthcare. 2017 Jeannie Gatrell Memorial Scholarship Jeannie’s Wish is a nonprofit organization established in 2012. The mission of  Jeannie’s Wish is to raise community awareness of brain aneurysms, their symptoms and increase early detection. The proceeds secured will be utilized for the annual Jeannie Gatrell Memorial Scholarship provided to a student in West Virginia or the Tri-State community impacted in some way by an aneurysm. Eligibility Requirements are as follows. • Family life in some way must be (or has been) affected by an aneurysm. Special consideration will be given to any applicant impacted in some way by a brain aneurysm. • Resident of the State of West Virginia or the Tri-State community. • Applicant is currently a high school senior or is already attending or plans to attend an accredited college, university or trade school.  Deadline is March 31, 2017. Jim Bailey Scholarship Application 2017 – One time award of $600 to a student who is pursuing a degree or certificate from an accredited program of no more than two years. Please see attached application for further details. Deadline is April 15, 2017

2016-2017 Little General Scholarship – Little General Store. Inc. is offering ten $1,000 scholarships. Eligible students must be graduating this spring and attending college this fall. This scholarship will be awarded based on a combination of academics and financial need. Please see attached link for more information. Deadline is March 24, 2017

Matthews Scholarship Form 2017 – This scholarship is payable over two years, provided that the student maintains at least a 2.5 GPA in the first year of college/technical school. Each scholarship recipient shall be chosen on the basis of application and subsequent acceptance and enrollment into a nursing program at a college or technical school; demonstrated financial need; solid academic performance; involvement in school and volunteer activities; and quality of essay and letters of recommendation.  Deadline is March 17, 2017
Edna and Mildred Monk Scholarship-2017a – This scholarship is for the dependents of King’s Daughters Team Members and is for the first school year’s tuition, room and board, books and lab fees for students pursuing the field of nursing and is non-renewable. Four scholarships will be awarded. The Health Foundation will mail $500 directly to the recipients school of choice a the beginning of each semester. Deadline is March 31, 2017

Mensa Educational and Research Foundation – The Mensa scholarship program is open to applicants who will be enrolled next academic year in a degree program in an accredited U.S. college or university, and who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The applicant need not be a member of Mensa nor qualified for Mensa. The Mensa Foundation scholarships are awarded solely on the merits of the essay written by the applicant. The awards are not affected by age, race, gender, level of post-secondary education, or financial need. Awards will be made on the basis of an essay of no more than 550 words. The essay is to describe the applicant’s career, vocational, or academic goal. We encourage students to carefully proofread their essay. The essays will be judged and scholarships will be awarded at three levels: local, regional, and national. Awards are made in amounts ranging from $300 to $1000. All entries must be submitted by January 15, 2017.

Par Mar Stores Scholarship – Par Mar stores are offering multiple scholarships for one full year of study. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility. Applications will be accepted from February 1st to April 30th.

2016-2017 Pumpkin Festival – This scholarship is open to any graduating senior that is planning to attend a public West Virginia college and/or university and need financial assistance to complete their studies. Please see attached application for more details. Deadline is March 15, 2017

2017 Optimist Oratorical Contest – Each year the Optimist Club of Huntington sponsors an oratorical contest. The attached application and information further explains the topic, dates and rules. Students will have the opportunity to compete for $15,000.  Deadline is March 10, 2017. www.optimist.org

Rick Vecellio Scholarship – The Foundation will annually award a $2500 scholarship per year for four years. The scholarship may be used for any  educational field the student wishes to pursue. Please see attached application for further details. Deadline is April 15th.

Roxanna Booth Scholarship Application – Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of financial need, merit, and personal ambition to pursue a degree in nursing or related medical technician field. Apply for the FAFSA is a prerequisite to the application process. Deadline is April 1, 2017

HSENGINEERINGSCHOLARSHIPAPPLICATION – The Huntington Post of the American Society of Military Engineers is providing a scholarship to high school seniors planning to pursue degrees in engineering. To qualify, applicants must be graduating high school in the spring of 2017 and plan to enter college in the fall of 2017. Please see attached application for more information. US JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship – $1,000 scholarship for students who plan to continue their education at accredited college, university, or vocational school. Please see application for details. Deadline is January 20, 2017

2017 WAYCOSE Scholarship – The WAYCOSE Federal Credit Union will award three non-renewable $500 scholarship to children of credit union members. See application for further details. Deadline is April 14, 2017.

Westmoreland Woman scholarship app – One scholarship worth $1,000  to a deserving male or female student is available. Please see application for further information. Deadline is April 10, 2017
