Tablets distributed to Freshmen & Sophomore students

Spring Valley is very happy to announce that we will be rolling out a 1:1 student to computer ratio beginning this school year. Every Freshmen and Sophomore student will receive a Windows 8 tablet purchased by Wayne County Schools.  Every future freshmen class will also receive a tablet.

The tablets will be utilized primarily for Math 9 and Math 10 courses. However students may use them in other classes at teacher discretion. The curriculum and all support materials for the math courses can be downloaded to the devices so students will not need an Internet connection to work at home. However the tablet can be used on the internet at home with full filtering in place.

The devices will be returned at the end of the school year to be serviced and returned the following year.

More information will be given at the freshmen and sophomore orientations. These will occur on Tuesday, March 29th at 5pm for freshmen and 7pm for sophomores. All students with their parents/guardians are strongly urged to attend. Information will be given about the transition to 1:1, use of devices, and expectations for students.

Each student and parent/guardian will also need to sign an Acceptable Use Form for school technology (required every year) as well as a signed “1:1: Notebook Use Acceptance Form.” The devices will be distributed after the first day of school.

Spring Valley teachers and administrators are extremely excited about the possibilities this will open up academically. In my opinion as the school’s Systems Operator and a Social Studies teacher, this tablet is a perfect blend of portability, speed, and productivity.  It can be a true game changer in the way we teach our students with the expanded possibilities it allows us in the classroom. With a 1:1 we can now instruct students in ways that were not possible before and prepare them even better for their post-secondary pursuits.

The tablets received will be Asus Transformers T100.  Here are the specifications:

  • 64 GB Solid State Drive
  • Front facing camera
  • Quad Core Processor
  • 11 hours of battery life on continuous use which provides more than enough to last the whole school day if charged overnight. (Plug them up nightly with your cellphone/ipods 🙂 )
  • 10.1″ HD multi-touch display
  • USB 3.0 port
  • Weight: 1.2 lbs or 2.4 with keyboard dock attached makes is super light!
  • Microsoft Office 365
  • Easily attachable keyboard

  1. Will the school provide screen protectors for the tablet, or do we have to purchase them ourselves?
