Advanced Placement Courses

Advanced Placement, or AP for short, courses allow students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. In more than 30 rigorous courses, each culminating in a rigorous exam, AP courses provide willing academically prepared students with the opportunity to earn college credit and/or advanced placement.

Courses

Spring Valley currently offers AP courses on campus including: Chemistry, US History, Civics, English Language, English Literature, Spanish, & Studio Art!

Online

Students are encouraged to take AP courses online. Students also can take dual-credit courses through Marshall University.

Dual credit courses include: English 101 and 201, Biology 104 and 105, and Speech 103. Mount West Community and Technical College (MCTC) credit is offered in many of our CTE courses and other subject areas.

Requirements

Each May, students take an AP Course Exam which will determine what (if any) college credits or advanced program placement they will receive.
The AP exam score is a weighted combination of the student’s scores on the multiple-choice section and the free-response sections. The final score is reported on a 5-point scale, but each college or university are responsible for sitting their own credit and placement policies.

Important Info

-Students and Parents need to pay all test fees at the beginning of the school year.

-Contact your student’s counselor for information on fees and waivers.

Students who choose not to take the AP exam:

-Lose AP course credit

-Classes will count ONLY as a general requirement

-Letter Grades will NOT count as weighted

-Students will take an end-of-course exam in lieu of the AP Exam
