The West Virginia Nursery & Landscape Association would like to invite you to encourage any graduating seniors who plan to attend West Virginia University and who have been accepted into either the Horticulture or Landscape Architecture programs to apply for the George W. Longenecker Memorial Scholarship. The student chosen for this scholarship will receive full tuition reimbursement for four semesters as long as he or she maintains at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA with full credits in either of these programs.

WVNLA will check in with the scholarship recipient each semester to ensure the student has maintained at least a 3.0 GPA and is still enrolled in the Landscape Architecture or Horticultural programs. Recipients who do not maintain a 3.0 GPA will not be eligible to receive further scholarship funds until their cumulative GPA meets the 3.0 requirement. This scholarship is only available for the student's first four semesters.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications/requirements: be a West Virginia resident; be a high school senior accepted into West Virginia University’s Landscape Architecture or Horticulture programs OR any in-state resident student entering/accepted into his or her first year of WVU Landscape Architecture or Horticulture program; and have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Applicant must complete an online application and submit an essay stating his or her interest in Landscape Architecture or Ornamental Horticulture and why he or she feels it is important to the state of West Virginia to develop future professionals in the nursery and landscape design industry. Scholarship applications will also be scrutinized based on:

an understanding of the major and profession,
how the industry benefits the state of West Virginia,
what career they hope to follow after graduation,
how the major could be applied in their current community;
and any work or study experience the applicant has in the green industry.

Students should be aware that the use of Artificial Intelligence in writing the essay is strongly discouraged and that the essay will be subject to AI-discerning software. The deadline to apply is March 15. Semifinalists may be scheduled for a Zoom interview with scholarship committee members.
